The Middle East: Promise and Peril: A Lecture by Joseph Baxer

June 25, 4:00 pm

The Middle East appears to be in disarray. The Arab Awakening is crushed by Arab autocrats. Sunni and Shia tensions continue. No settlement is on the radar screen for Irael and Palestine. Millions are displaced from a devastated Syria. Persian Iran is ambitions, Turkey in upheaval. The Gulf States are accused of human rights abuses. In this patchwork perilous puzzle, what may be signs of home, promise?

Returning from Spring visits to the Arab Gulf States and drawing on previous visits to Iran, Syria, Turkey, Egypt and Israel, Dr. Baxer will reflect on this complex situation and invite a dialogue.

Joseph J Baxer is currently Executive Director of the Intercultural Institute of Connecticut, President of the United Nations Association of Connecticut and US representative to the United Nations for the London based NGO, Strategies for Peace. His most recent book, published in English and French, is An Intercultural Life, exploring the crossroads of religion and culture.
